The New York Yankees have encountered significant bullpen challenges recently, prompting pitching coach Matt Blake to rotate multiple pitchers in search of reliable and healthy options. Despite being among the top bullpens in baseball just a month ago, their ERA has slipped to 12th place at 3.68.
In response to these challenges, the Yankees made a tough decision over the weekend by designating Phil Bickford for assignment after a difficult outing. This move is part of broader efforts to navigate injuries affecting the team. Currently, they are expecting pitchers Ian Hamilton, Scott Effross, and Lou Trivino to return soon, each managing individual issues. Starters Clarke Schmidt and Cody Poteet could also contribute from the bullpen once they recover.
The Yankees have been linked in speculation to Oakland Athletics’ Mason Miller, a 25-year-old pitcher known for his impressive stats including a 1.96 ERA this season. However, acquiring Miller would likely require a significant trade package. A more feasible target could be Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins, who boasts a 1.50 ERA, an 81.2% left-on-base rate, and a 48.8% ground ball rate.
In the infield, Jazz Chisholm has been mentioned as a potential solution if Gleyber Torres does not show improvement by the late July deadline. Blake emphasized that the Yankees are actively scouting for players who can complement their roster, particularly seasoned veterans who could provide stability.
Despite challenges, the Yankees have utilized players like Michael Tonkin effectively, maintaining a strategic approach to managing their bullpen resources while aiming to stay competitive. This approach underscores their flexibility in navigating the complexities of the season.
