As the trade deadline approaches, any first baseman showing signs of offensive resurgence becomes a target for Houston Astros trade rumors. Leading the pack is a reported interest in a prominent player, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Heyman provided updates on Thursday night, indicating Houston’s intentions heading into the deadline.
“The Astros, now a strong contender in the West once again, are looking to bolster their starting rotation and add a hitter, possibly targeting an upgrade at first base,” he wrote. “Their top choice appears to be Diamondbacks’ first baseman, who is set to become a free agent after this season.”
The player in question, known for his defensive prowess with two recent National League Gold Gloves at first base, is having a standout year at the plate. In 87 games, he boasts a .271 batting average, 22 home runs, and an impressive .871 OPS. This stands in stark contrast to Houston’s collective first basemen, who have struggled this season with a combined .204 average, 9 home runs, and a .598 OPS.
As Houston emerges as a clear buyer with recent strong performances, despite a slow start to the 2024 season, they find themselves just two games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West after winning 12 of their last 14 games.
Christian Walker Emerges as Prime Target for Astros
While Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains a popular name in trade discussions, his high salary and future financial commitments make him less appealing for the Astros compared to the more affordable Walker. Walker, earning $10.9 million this year, will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, offering flexibility for Houston’s immediate needs.
Both players would command significant trade packages, with Toronto likely seeking more for Guerrero given his youth and additional year of team control.
Houston’s First Base Situation
Since parting ways with Jose Abreu in mid-June, Jon Singleton has primarily handled first base duties. Despite a recent uptick in performance, Singleton’s overall numbers remain modest, highlighting Houston’s interest in upgrading the position.
As the Astros weigh their options leading up to the trade deadline, Singleton’s recent improvement provides optimism but underscores the ongoing search for a more reliable solution at first base.
