According to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Newcastle United has expressed interest in Malick Thiaw. Despite securing Lloyd Kelly on a Bosman transfer, the Magpies are actively seeking another center-back and have approached AC Milan regarding Thiaw. AC Milan is reportedly seeking between €35-40 million for the defender in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Thiaw, who joined AC Milan from Schalke in August 2022, has had a mixed stint with the Italian club, making 54 appearances and contributing one assist. Despite fluctuations in form, the 22-year-old remains highly regarded, drawing attention from top clubs like Real Madrid over the past year. Thiaw is reportedly eager to move to the Premier League when he departs AC Milan.
Newcastle’s interest in Thiaw is driven by their need to bolster their defensive ranks, especially with long-term injuries sidelining Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. With Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Dan Burn all over 30, Thiaw represents a youthful option for Newcastle. The club has initiated discussions with AC Milan about the player, who is seen as a feasible target given Newcastle’s financial capabilities.
While AC Milan’s asking price is substantial, Newcastle United’s pursuit of Thiaw may intensify as they continue their pursuit of defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season.
