Former standout Tyler Caron from St. Mary’s (TX) announced on Saturday that he will be joining Oklahoma State’s basketball team after entering the transfer portal in March.
Caron had a notable career spanning five seasons at St. Mary’s, a Division II school in San Antonio, TX. Following a standout 2023-24 season as a redshirt senior, the Longview, TX native averaged 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. He shot 49.6% from the field and an impressive 44.1% from beyond the arc on over five attempts per game.
During a game against St. Edwards (TX) in late February, Caron recorded a season-high 23 points by shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point range. In the 2022-23 season, he averaged 12.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, earning Third Team All-Lone Star Conference Honors.
Before his time at St. Mary’s, Caron played basketball at Spring Hill High School in Longview, TX. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 210 pounds, Caron’s size and skill as a perimeter shooter are expected to enhance the Cowboys’ offensive spacing. His extensive college experience includes 88 starts, making him a valuable addition for head coach Steve Lutz and his coaching staff.
Caron joins CJ Smith from Coffeyville Community College (KS) as the second player to join Oklahoma State’s roster since late June. Their acquisitions are particularly significant as the Cowboys compete in the challenging Big 12 conference. The additions of Smith and Caron bolster the team’s depth and bring valuable experience to the bench, benefiting both game-time situations and practice sessions.
