The Rockies have opted to designate Dakota Hudson for assignment, citing concerns over his command and suitability for the team’s second half. This move clears the way for Tanner Gordon’s debut in the majors. While Colorado’s 40-man roster currently has an open spot, it is reserved for the impending return of Germán Márquez from Tommy John surgery and the 60-day injured list.
Hudson, who leads the league with 12 losses and tops the National League with 46 walks, posted a 5.84 ERA, which was exacerbated during the Rockies’ ongoing youth movement.
“Now’s the opportunity as we get into the second half to see some of our younger players,” commented manager Bud Black. “Some guys that we feel can be contributors moving forward.”
Signed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal alongside catcher Jacob Stallings earlier this year, Hudson’s tenure with the Rockies was inconsistent. While he delivered a promising 5⅓ innings in his debut without allowing an earned run, subsequent performances were uneven, including several starts with five or more earned runs and multiple games with four or more walks.
Gordon, who posted a 6.15 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Albuquerque, has shown potential according to Rockies’ scouts since his acquisition alongside Victor Vodnik in a trade that sent Pierce Johnson to Atlanta during the 2023 trade deadline. Gordon will fill Hudson’s spot until Márquez’s anticipated return.
Márquez, currently rehabbing in Double-A Hartford after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2023, is expected to start Tuesday and could rejoin the Rockies later in the week.
