As the 2024 MLB trade deadline nears, Mason Miller stands out as a key name in discussions, but the Oakland Athletics appear hesitant to move him just yet.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the likelihood of the Athletics trading their standout reliever is lower than anticipated, with odds set at around 40%. Morosi noted on MLB Network that there hasn’t been significant dialogue between Oakland and other teams regarding a potential deal for Miller.
Miller has been a standout performer for the Athletics this season, showcasing impressive stats with a 2.39 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 37.2 innings pitched as of July 9. Despite Oakland’s position at the bottom of the American League West standings, Miller’s performance suggests he could command substantial returns in a trade scenario.
Several factors weigh in favor of Oakland retaining Miller. His exceptional 46.5% strikeout rate and low .254 opponent BABIP underscore his value as a dominant reliever. Moreover, with two full seasons of pre-arbitration remaining and free agency not looming until 2029, Miller offers significant value relative to his salary, which could drive up his trade value.
Morosi highlighted that for a rebuilding team like the Athletics, there’s little urgency to part ways with Miller immediately. The upcoming MLB Draft has also diverted attention from trade discussions across the league, contributing to a temporary slowdown in trade activity.
In addition to Miller, Morosi mentioned outfielder and DH Brent Rooker as another potential trade candidate for the Athletics. Rooker, with a solid .278 batting average and 18 home runs by mid-2024, has drawn interest from teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
Overall, while interest in Miller and Rooker exists, Oakland’s current focus on evaluating their roster and the approaching draft suggests that any trade decisions will unfold closer to the deadline as teams finalize their strategies and priorities.
