The Los Angeles Lakers had a quiet free agency period but are eyeing significant trade options, including the possibility of acquiring Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans.
Acquiring Ingram, who was originally drafted by the Lakers with the No. 2 pick in 2016 before being traded to the Pelicans in 2019, would be ironic given his potential role as a third star alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Ingram has developed into a consistent scorer, averaging between 20.8 and 24.7 points per game over the last five seasons and earning an All-Star nod in New Orleans. He is entering the final year of a substantial $158 million contract and seeks a maximum extension worth $208 million over four years.
Jacob Rude of SB Nation noted the Pelicans’ hesitation to commit such significant funds with other big contracts already on their roster, making Ingram available for a trade. The Lakers, familiar with dealing with the Pelicans’ front office, could utilize their draft picks to facilitate a deal. However, the Pelicans’ primary requirement— a starting center— poses a challenge as the Lakers’ current assets may not match this need.
Despite possessing 2029 and 2031 first-round picks and several pick swaps, the Lakers may need to involve a third team to finalize the trade, possibly including D’Angelo Russell to meet salary requirements. Russell’s salary of nearly $19 million for the 2024-25 season contrasts with Ingram’s $36 million-plus, necessitating additional players to balance the deal.
While trade details remain complex and uncertain, Ingram’s recent playoff performance and injury history have impacted his trade value. The Pelicans continue to seek a suitable trade partner, with the Lakers among potential destinations should negotiations align.
