Kansas State suffered a significant departure this offseason when offensive coordinator Collin Klein departed for Texas A&M. However, despite this setback, there’s plenty of optimism brewing among Wildcats fans as they gear up for the 2024 season, largely fueled by the exceptional talent of dual-threat quarterback Avery Johnson. According to On3 Industry Rankings, Johnson was ranked as the 9th best quarterback in the nation in the 2023 recruiting cycle, a fact that fills Manhattan with pride as their star quarterback prepares for the upcoming campaign.

An assistant coach from a rival Big 12 team expressed admiration for Johnson’s skills. In the 2024 Athlon Preview for Kansas State, praise was heaped on the quarterback who played a pivotal role in guiding his team to a bowl victory in the closing game of the 2023 season.

“Losing Collin Klein is a significant loss, but Matt Wells brings a wealth of experience. If you’re looking for a notable change, it’ll likely be seen in how they shape their passing game around Avery Johnson,” the coach noted. “Keeping him from transferring out after the departure of the offensive coordinator is a massive win for them; it positions them well in the upper echelons of the new league… Chris Klieman has done an excellent job navigating recruiting realities and the transfer portal, blending K-State’s traditional strengths in developing talent with a pursuit of top-tier recruits.”

Johnson stands out as one of the highest-rated signees in the history of Kansas State football, boasting an impressive high school career that included accolades like Under Armour All-American and U.S. Army All-American Bowl honors. He also earned recognition as an Elite 11 quarterback, a distinction no Kansas State quarterback had achieved since Josh Freeman in 2005.

Heading into this season, expectations are soaring for Johnson following his standout performances last year. In the 2023 season, he showcased his immense talent in eight games, including two starts. His MVP-worthy performance in the Pop Tarts Bowl victory over NC State saw him contribute three touchdowns and over 200 all-purpose yards.

During the 2023 campaign, Johnson threw for 479 yards and five touchdowns without any interceptions. On the ground, he added 296 yards and seven touchdowns on just 52 carries. His exceptional efforts earned him the title of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Notably, his seven rushing touchdowns matched a school record for freshmen, alongside Wildcat legend Deuce Vaughn in 2020.
