The Cleveland Browns have solidified their commitment to veteran kicker Dustin Hopkins with a significant long-term extension. As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hopkins has inked a lucrative three-year deal worth $15.9 million, featuring $8.36 million in guaranteed money. This contract ensures Hopkins will remain a pivotal part of the Browns’ special teams lineup through the conclusion of the 2027 NFL season.

Hopkins arrived in Cleveland ahead of the 2023 campaign after a trade from the Los Angeles Chargers. His inaugural season with the Browns proved highly successful, marked by a career-best performance in field goal accuracy at 91.7% and nearly flawless execution on extra points, converting 24 of 26 attempts. However, his stellar season was cut short by a hamstring injury in late December, highlighting a concern about his durability as he approaches his 34th birthday.

Despite these injury challenges and the inevitable effects of age, the Browns’ front office remains optimistic about Hopkins’ ability to maintain his high level of play. They have placed their faith in Hopkins by making him one of the league’s top-paid kickers, with an average annual salary of $5.3 million. This places him in the company of notable kickers like Ka’imi Fairbairn, while trailing established leaders such as Justin Tucker, Jake Elliott, Matt Gay, and Graham Gano in terms of compensation.

Hopkins’ journey to Cleveland was preceded by a distinguished tenure with the Washington Football Team, where he boasted an 84% field goal success rate and a stellar 94.2% on extra points. His brief stint with the Chargers also saw him maintain a strong performance, converting 9 out of 10 field goals and all 12 extra points attempted during his time there.

With this extension, the Browns not only secure a reliable kicker for their future campaigns but also make a strategic investment in maintaining stability and efficiency in their special teams unit. As Hopkins enters the latter stages of his career, Cleveland remains hopeful that his experience and skill set will continue to contribute positively to their quest for success in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
