LSU safety Matthew Langlois has decided to step away from football due to ongoing injuries, marking his medical retirement from the sport, sources at LSU Country have confirmed.

Once a highly sought-after prospect, Langlois hails from Louisiana and was ranked among the top safeties in the nation during the 2021 recruiting cycle. He made an impactful debut in 2021, appearing in nine games as a true freshman. However, his career took a downturn when he suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2022 season during a game against Southern University. This setback was followed by another injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season.

After missing spring ball in 2024, Langlois made the decision to retire from football officially. Reflecting on his decision, Langlois shared, “I’ve been dealing with an ACL injury since the Southern game, which ultimately led to me medically retiring. I stayed at LSU because I wanted to play for LSU, and I was very close to becoming the player I wanted to be. But God had other plans, and despite my love for the game and LSU, my body cannot continue.”

Langlois leaves behind a void in LSU’s defensive backfield, which now faces uncertainties heading into the upcoming season. The current roster includes transfers Jardin Gilbert and Austin Ausberry, alongside returning starters Major Burns and Sage Ryan. Key contributors such as Kylin Jackson and Jordan Allen also add depth to the position group.

To bolster their ranks, LSU is welcoming several freshmen defensive backs, including Dashawn Spears [McBryde], Joel Rogers, Wallace Foster, and Ju’Juan Johnson. The competition and performance during Fall Camp will be crucial in determining how the team shapes up in the defensive backfield this fall.
