Late Night in the Phog is a cherished Kansas tradition that began in 1985 during Larry Brown’s tenure as head coach. It marks the start of the basketball season for both men’s and women’s teams and typically features a musical performance. Past performers have included Snoop Dogg, Shaquille O’Neal (as DJ Diesel), Lil Yachty, and most recently Flo Rida.
This year, on October 18, Nelly will take the stage for the 40th Late Night in the Phog. Nelly, a three-time Grammy Award winner and the eighth best-selling rapper of all time, is renowned for his 2000 debut album “Country Grammar,” which achieved diamond status. His hit singles include “Hot in Herre,” “Dilemma,” “Ride wit Me,” and “Over & Over.”
In addition to Nelly’s performance, the event will feature scrimmages by the men’s and women’s basketball teams, performances by the KU pep band and spirit squads, skits from Rock Chalk Video, and introductions of coaches and players.
This year’s Late Night will provide Kansas fans with a first look at the revamped Kansas men’s team, which includes talented transfers AJ Storr, Rylan Griffen, Zeke Mayo, and Shakeel Moore, alongside highly touted freshmen Flory Bidunga and Rakease Passmore.
Fans attending Late Night will also have the opportunity to explore the newly renovated Allen Fieldhouse, celebrating its 70th season as the Jayhawks’ home. Renovations feature new concourses, large video boards, enhanced seating options, and a new center-hung scoreboard.
Further details about surrounding events, including Phogfest, will be announced later, along with information on ticket availability for the event later this summer, as stated in the KU Athletics release.
