Quarterback Payton Thorne, who led Auburn’s struggling passing game in the SEC last season, is gearing up for his final college football campaign with the Tigers. Auburn’s head coach, Hugh Freeze, addressed the decision to retain Thorne during SEC Media Days, emphasizing both belief in his quarterback and the evolving dynamics within the team.

Freeze candidly acknowledged his preference for developing players rather than heavily relying on the transfer portal for immediate solutions. He acknowledged the need to adapt to the changing landscape of college football recruiting while expressing confidence in Thorne’s potential with the right supporting cast.

“I’ll be the first to say I’m probably not the greatest portal recruiter that there is. I like developing players and getting to know them and being with them,” Freeze remarked. “I just felt like we could put some pieces around him to allow him to reach his potential. He’s proven he can use his feet to move the chains when we need him to.”

Highlighting Thorne’s strengths, Freeze pointed to the quarterback’s solid performances in a previous Power Five conference and his ability to contribute with mobility. He also underscored the importance of building confidence within Thorne through improved team dynamics and supportive staff.

“I believe with the confidence he’s sensing right now, and what he sees in the staff room now, to feeling like he’s got a Dre Lambert-Smith out there that can win, that’s done it, and some young guys,” Freeze explained. “You combine those two things, the confidence that he feels and year two with us, combined with … the tools to have a successful year.”

Thorne, aware of the expectations placed upon him, understands the need to elevate his performance this upcoming season. Freeze acknowledged the depth at quarterback with Hank Brown, Holden Geriner, and Walker White ready to compete, reinforcing the competitive environment Thorne faces.

“He knows he’s got to produce. We don’t run from that,” Freeze affirmed. “There’s guys there to push him.”

As Auburn prepares for the upcoming season, the focus remains on optimizing Thorne’s potential while fostering healthy competition within the quarterback ranks. The team’s strategy under Freeze combines developmental growth with strategic roster management, aiming to propel Thorne and the Tigers towards a successful campaign in the SEC.
