Kansas basketball is in the process of filling two scholarship vacancies left by former commits Labaron Philon and Riley Kugel. Head Coach Bill Self is actively scouring the transfer portal for potential additions to the team. However, the coaching staff also has the flexibility to bolster the roster with walk-on players who do not occupy scholarship slots.
On the same day that Self announced the entry of former Cal State Northridge guard Chris Carter into the transfer portal, Kansas secured a commitment from Will Thengvall, a senior from Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. Thengvall, a Wichita native, will join the Jayhawks as a walk-on for the upcoming season, adding depth to the team’s non-scholarship ranks.
Thengvall comes to Kansas with impressive credentials, having averaged 17.6 points per game and earning the 5A boys Player of the Year award following a standout senior season. Standing at 6-foot-4, he is expected to complete his high school coursework this summer before officially joining the Jayhawks in Lawrence.
I am excited to announce that I will continue my academic and basketball career at the University of Kansas. I want to thank Coach Self and KU's coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. Thank you Coach LJ Goolsby and Coach Eck for all of your help and support.

In joining Kansas, Thengvall will contribute to a walk-on group that includes Justin Cross, Wilder Evers, Dillon Wilhite, and Patrick Cassidy, all of whom have remaining eligibility. This addition follows the graduation of longtime Jayhawk Michael Jankovich after the past season.
While Thengvall’s arrival may not generate major headlines, he is anticipated to enhance the team’s practice environment with his competitive spirit and skills. His presence underscores Kansas’s commitment to depth and competitiveness across all facets of its roster as it prepares for the upcoming season.
