Baltimore Orioles pitcher Albert Suárez and second baseman Jorge Mateo sustained injuries in quick succession during the third inning of Tuesday night’s 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins.
Mateo collided with shortstop Gunnar Henderson while both were diving for a ground ball hit by Jesús Sánchez behind second base, resulting in a single for Sánchez. Mateo initially got up but fell back to the ground, favoring his left arm in apparent pain. Orioles’ athletic trainers attended to him on the field, and the team later reported he was experiencing discomfort in his left elbow.
Manager Brandon Hyde confirmed Mateo’s X-rays were negative but mentioned he would undergo an MRI for further evaluation. Hyde expressed the team’s concern, noting Mateo’s importance to the Orioles’ lineup.
Following Mateo’s injury, Jordan Westburg shifted from third base to second, and Ramón Urías entered the game at third, batting ninth. On the subsequent play, a sharply hit comebacker by Otto López struck Suárez on the right foot, deflecting toward the Marlins’ dugout and resulting in a bases-loaded single.
Hyde and a trainer attended to Suárez on the mound, where he revealed a left shin contusion. Despite initially attempting to continue, Suárez eventually left the game after allowing six runs and eight hits over two-plus innings. He was replaced by Keegan Akin.
Reflecting on his injury, Suárez noted that while the X-rays showed no fractures, his shin was swollen and the pain had intensified after the adrenaline wore off.
The injuries to Suárez and Mateo present a challenge for the Orioles as they navigate their roster and seek to regain momentum in the season. The team will await further updates on both players’ conditions as they prepare for upcoming games.
