John Mara is anticipating a definitive answer soon regarding whether the Giants have found their franchise quarterback.

“I’m still confident in the decision to extend him, given his strong performance in 2022,” Mara said about the four-year extension Daniel Jones signed in March 2023. “He was injured last year, and let’s face it: our offensive line was not performing well. We need to give him a chance with an improved offensive line and better supporting players to see what he can achieve.”

Speaking to the media on August 1, 2024, Mara reflected on the decision to extend Jones rather than use the franchise tag, which was instead applied to Saquon Barkley. Over the past year, the Giants have actively sought a replacement for Jones, as highlighted by HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll explored trading up to draft quarterbacks Jayden Daniels (Commanders) or Drake Maye (Patriots), partly due to Jones’ history of neck injuries and a torn ACL.

“I was hesitant about trading too much for a quarterback,” Mara admitted, “but I was ready to support that move if that’s what was decided. Instead, we chose to stick with Daniel and add a weapon for him, which I believe will pay off.”

That new addition is Malik Nabers, who has impressed during training camp.

“I’m thrilled with what I’ve seen from him,” Mara said. “He brings unique skills and a distinctive attitude to the field.”

Mara isn’t worried that considering a new quarterback might upset Jones.

“I check in with him occasionally, and he’s a professional who understands the business,” Mara noted. “If anything, this likely motivates him even more. And he doesn’t need extra motivation. I expect him to have a stellar season.”

Mara had previously joked about the Giants being featured on “Hard Knocks” only under extreme circumstances. However, the Giants ended up creating a unique offseason series, which diverged from the traditional training camp focus.

“It turned out better than I could have hoped,” Mara said. “I was initially nervous, but the honest portrayal was well-received. While there were uncomfortable moments, I’m glad it’s concluded.”

What changed his mind?

Mara explained that the original plan was to follow scouts with cameras for a sequel to the 2014 docuseries “Finding Giants,” until NFL Films proposed branding it as “Hard Knocks.”

“After several discussions, they convinced me that using the ‘Hard Knocks’ name would have a greater impact,” Mara said. “In the end, it worked out well.”

The “Hard Knocks” series underscored Mara’s assertion that while he shares his views on personnel decisions, he does not interfere with the choices of his decision-makers.

A notable example is Mara’s desire to retain Barkley, which was ultimately overridden by Schoen’s decision to let him go to the Eagles and redirect resources to other key positions.

“Every year, there will be personnel decisions I don’t fully agree with,” Mara said. “But it’s important to let the general manager and coach, especially when they are in agreement, make those decisions. Then, you can voice your concerns afterward.”
