Caleb Cunningham, ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Player Rankings, has committed to the University of Alabama. Caleb Cunningham announced his decision on Saturday following an official visit with the Crimson Tide from June 21-23. Previously, Cunningham had listed his top six schools, with Coach Kalen DeBoer’s new program making significant progress in his recruitment.
Cunningham visited Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee officially, and also made an unofficial visit to Ole Miss in early June. Alongside these five schools, Mississippi State was also in consideration. Auburn and Florida were seen as the frontrunners before his second visit to Tuscaloosa.
After his official visit to Alabama, Cunningham expressed his strong preference for the Crimson Tide, citing their resources and development opportunities as key factors in his decision. He noted, “Bama is No. 1. They’re No. 1, for sure,” and praised their potential for developing him as a receiver.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect was re-offered by Alabama on January 24 and initially included them in his Top 12 list. Cunningham’s interest intensified following a visit with Alabama wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard, which left a strong impression on him.
Cunningham’s commitment is a boost for Alabama, which now has 21 commitments for its 2025 class, currently ranked No. 2 overall and the best in the SEC, according to the On3 Sports Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. He is the second wide receiver to join this class, alongside fellow Top 100 recruit Lotzeir Brooks from Millville, N.J.
Despite speculation about Alabama’s future following Coach Nick Saban’s departure, Cunningham’s commitment underscores the program’s continued dominance in recruiting. The Crimson Tide have secured 12 commitments since early June and are trending positively for additional top recruits, including five-star offensive tackle Ty Haywood and No. 2 running back AK Dear. A commitment from either could propel Alabama to the top recruiting class in the nation, a feat that seemed improbable just six months ago.
Nick Saban was recently honored with the ‘Icon’ award at the ESPYs, and while some may have doubted Alabama’s future, SEC Network reporter Peter Burns suggests that the program is in a strong position under new leadership with Kalen DeBoer.
