The Jets’ defense learned from their sluggish performance in joint practices with the Carolina Panthers last week and delivered a strong showing against the New York Giants. During the initial team period, safety Chuck Clark made a significant impact with a big hit on Giants running back Eric Gray, setting an assertive tone for the practice.

That hit really wakes you up and gets your adrenaline pumping,” Clark said. “It honestly gives you a rush. I thrive on plays like that.

Having missed the 2023 season due to an ACL tear last June, Clark has been a standout in joint practices throughout training camp. Last week, he made a memorable tackle on Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard that left Hubbard struggling to get up.

Clark views these joint practices as crucial for assessing progress. “It’s a chance to measure where you are, what you need to improve on, and what you can enhance,” Clark explained. “Practicing against the same teammates every day means you get used to their techniques, but facing different, high-level opponents provides a true benchmark for your skills.”

Clark is part of a safety group that includes Tony Adams and Ashtyn Davis. Adams, who secured a starting role last season, praised Clark’s leadership and experience. “Chuck is a veteran,” Adams said. “When Chuck Clark speaks, you listen. He’s accomplished a lot in this league and will be a huge asset. His experience will help me grow as well, and I’m eager to play alongside him.”

With a background in the Baltimore Ravens’ top defense since 2017, Clark understands the importance of maintaining high standards. “The key is consistent practice and the habits you build that influence the team over the years,” Clark said. “It’s about building those practices into our daily routine and carrying that identity into games.”

Although head coach Robert Saleh has yet to reveal if any starters will participate in the preseason finale against the Giants, Clark is already focusing on the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on September 9. “I visualize making plays and experiencing the game in a new environment,” Clark said. “I’m excited about the night game, imagining the atmosphere, and envisioning how it will all unfold.
