The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly finalized a four-year, $81 million contract extension with cornerback AJ Terrell, which includes a record-breaking $65.8 million in guaranteed money.
This deal, confirmed by ESPN and NFL Network on Thursday morning, sets a new standard for cornerbacks, making Terrell the highest guaranteed player on a four-year contract in NFL history. He also becomes the second-highest-paid cornerback overall, trailing only Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander in annual earnings.
At 25 years old, Terrell was drafted 16th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft after his college career at Clemson. His extension follows a series of significant moves by the Falcons to bolster their defense, including acquiring pass rusher Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots and signing free agent safety Justin Simmons.
With this contract, Terrell will earn a substantial per-year salary, positioning him as the second-highest-paid cornerback in the league. The Falcons have made a strong commitment to their defense with this deal, ensuring Terrell remains a key component of their secondary.
Terrell, who was a second-team All-Pro in his second NFL season in 2021, has established himself as one of the top cover corners in the league. During his rookie year, he recorded 61 solo tackles, one interception, and three tackles for loss. In 2021, he achieved career highs with three interceptions and 81 solo tackles. Last season, Terrell appeared in all 17 games, making 45 tackles and four tackles for loss.
The Falcons are scheduled to play their final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night, with the regular season opener set at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
