The Bills signed the veteran quarterback on August 20, just a week after he was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders. With injuries to Mitch Trubisky and Shane Buechele, the team brought in Brown to provide quarterback depth. However, he had less than a week to prepare for the Bills’ 31-26 loss to the Carolina Panthers on August 24 in the preseason finale.

Although Brown performed reasonably well against the Panthers, completing 11-of-12 passes for 105 yards and adding a 13-yard run, the Bills decided to release him on August 25 as part of their initial roster cuts ahead of Tuesday’s final roster deadline.

Bills Facing Quarterback Decisions

Brown entered the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, where he played two games with one start, completing 22-of-49 passes for 302 yards. He spent the following season on the practice squad.

Despite his solid performance in the preseason finale, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic noted that it wasn’t enough for Brown to secure a spot. Buscaglia suggested that the Bills’ third quarterback for the season might not yet be on the roster and that valuable options could emerge in the upcoming wave of cuts.

Ben DiNucci also had a strong showing in the preseason finale, completing 11-of-15 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Bills Hope for Mitch Trubisky’s Return

Trubisky, who injured his knee in the Bills’ 9-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 17, was initially expected to be out for a few weeks. Reports indicate that he is wearing a substantial knee brace and may need more time to recover.

There is ongoing speculation about the Bills potentially seeking a better backup option behind Josh Allen, with WGR 550 reporter Joe DiBiase mentioning that former Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill could be a consideration if no starting job becomes available for him.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay also noted increased interest in Tannehill due to disappointing performances by other backup quarterbacks, suggesting that his experience could be valuable for teams looking to strengthen their quarterback depth before the end of training camp.
