NFL insiders widely anticipate that the Chicago Bears will draft rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and trade Justin Fields. If that scenario unfolds, it’s unlikely the Bears would enter the 2024 season with just Williams and Tyson Bagent—a recent undrafted free agent—as their quarterbacks.
Kris Knox of Bleacher Report suggests that the Bears should bring in a seasoned veteran like Tyrod Taylor to provide additional support. Knox notes, “While Bagent performed admirably in his four starts last season, he lacks the experience needed to mentor the new quarterback. The Bears would benefit from a more established backup with significant starting experience, such as Jacoby Brissett or Tyrod Taylor.”
Taylor, a 13-year NFL veteran, had a successful stint with the Buffalo Bills, including a Pro Bowl appearance in 2015. After a recent two-year contract with the New York Giants, where he started five games in the past season, Taylor is set to enter free agency. Despite some recent injuries, Taylor remains a capable player with a strong arm and good mobility, making him a valuable asset as a backup.
The Bears are expected to draft Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, with minimal chance of another rookie overtaking him. Regardless of which rookie quarterback the Bears select, adding a veteran presence seems prudent. Bagent showed promise last season, but an experienced quarterback like Taylor or Brissett could provide necessary mentorship and stability. Expect the Bears to seek out a veteran quarterback this offseason to support both Williams and Bagent.
