The MLB trade deadline is known for its unpredictability. Teams eyeing the future might trade away star players, while those with championship aspirations are often willing to deplete their farm systems to win now. The St. Louis Cardinals, who have been successful over the past decade, are facing a downturn and may consider trading key players as the deadline approaches.

Nolan Arenado, despite having a no-trade clause, could be open to a move to the Los Angeles Dodgers to pursue a title, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Heyman notes, “Arenado, who despises losing, might be inclined to approve a trade given the Cardinals’ recent struggles. The Dodgers, while not in dire need of him, could be a team he’d consider.”

Arenado could bolster the Dodgers’ infield. Though the Dodgers don’t necessarily need a third baseman, they might be interested in upgrading their second base position. Max Muncy, the current third baseman, has been steady defensively and has hit .256/.362/.556 with nine home runs this season. Gavin Lux, who plays second base, has struggled offensively with a .191 average.

Muncy, who has experience at second base, could shift to that position if Arenado joins the team. Arenado, a 33-year-old with ten Gold Glove Awards and six Platinum Glove Awards, would provide both a significant defensive upgrade and a potent bat.

Arenado’s contract extends through 2027, originally signed with the Colorado Rockies for eight years and $260 million. After his trade to the Cardinals in 2021, the contract was adjusted to include an extra opt-out and an additional $15 million in 2027. Although Arenado’s high salary—$35 million in 2024, $32 million in 2025, $27 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027—makes him a costly option, the Rockies are covering a portion of those payments.

Currently, Arenado is batting .286/.348/.393 with an OPS+ of 113. Adding him would strengthen the Dodgers’ lineup and provide one of the best defenders of his era. If Arenado is aiming for a World Series win in 2024, the Dodgers could be a top choice for him.
