During Jon Gruden’s time as head coach, the Las Vegas Raiders made several controversial decisions, including making Trent Brown the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL in 2019 with a $66 million contract. Despite this hefty investment, Brown was traded to the New England Patriots after just two seasons.
Although Brown hasn’t lived up to his massive contract, he’s moving to a new team. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on March 19 that Brown will sign a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals have struggled with protecting quarterback Joe Burrow, and Brown is expected to improve their right tackle position. When healthy, Brown remains one of the top pass blockers in the NFL. In 2023, he faced one-on-one situations for 88.3% of his pass-blocking snaps—the highest among left tackles—and allowed pressure on just 7.1% of those snaps, the second-lowest in the league.
Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 370 pounds, Brown’s size makes him difficult for defensive linemen to move. If he can stay healthy, he could be a significant asset for the Bengals.
Trent Brown’s Health Concerns
Brown’s lack of a substantial contract this offseason is largely due to his health issues. The Raiders grew frustrated as he missed 16 games over two seasons and another eight games in 2021. Although he played all 17 games in 2022, he missed six games in 2023. His frequent injuries and outspoken nature, including his social media disputes with Raiders fans, contributed to his unpopularity.
Raiders’ Next Moves
Since trading Brown, the Raiders have struggled to find stability at right tackle. In Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest ESPN mock draft, he predicts the Raiders will select Alabama offensive tackle JC Latham with the 13th pick. Latham, who started 27 games in college and allowed only two sacks, could help solidify the offensive line and support the team’s run game, which struggled last season.
If the Raiders draft Latham, he would likely take on the right tackle role while Kolton Miller remains at left tackle. While the team needs a quarterback, bolstering the offensive line could be a prudent move if the ideal quarterback isn’t available.
