With just over a month remaining before the playoffs, a former World Series champion pitcher is now available.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Chicago Cubs have placed veteran pitcher Drew Smyly on outright waivers. Nightengale mentions that postseason contenders seeking a left-handed reliever can now make a claim for Smyly.
The 35-year-old Smyly, who won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, joined the Cubs in 2022. After spending most of his MLB career as a starter, Smyly shifted to a full-time relief role for the Cubs this season.
Smyly, a fan favorite in Chicago known for several memorable performances, has posted a solid 2.84 ERA in 39 relief appearances this year. It’s somewhat surprising that the Cubs are moving on from him, especially as they are just above the luxury tax threshold. By waiving Smyly, the Cubs will save a significant amount of money, potentially allowing another team to benefit from his services.
