Jets wide receiver Mike Williams has returned to team drills this week and is set to play in the team’s season opener against the 49ers on September 9, according to coach Robert Saleh. Williams expressed his satisfaction with being ready, noting, “I was putting in the work the whole time to make myself available this season. It’s all paying off at the right time.”
Williams, who tore his left ACL while with the Chargers last September, missed the remainder of the 2023 season. The Jets signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract in March. After spending the offseason rehabilitating his knee, Williams has recently resumed practice, albeit in a limited capacity.
Saleh acknowledged that while Williams will be available for the game against the 49ers, he might not be at full strength immediately. “It wouldn’t be fair to expect him to be 100 percent right away,” Saleh said. “We’ll be cautious with his usage, but he will definitely be in a position to make an impact.”
Williams had a strong practice session on Thursday, recording four or five catches during an intrasquad scrimmage. Despite the uncertainty about his exact workload, Williams stated, “I’m ready for whatever. Whenever my number is called, I’ll be prepared. I’m preparing to play the whole game or whatever they need from me.”
General Manager Joe Douglas praised quarterback Aaron Rodgers for his exceptional performance, calling him “amazing” and highlighting his mastery of the offense and leadership qualities.
The Jets have a break until Monday. In other updates, defensive tackle Leki Fotu has been placed on IR with a hamstring injury, which will sideline him for at least the first four games. Cornerback Michael Carter II (ankle) participated fully in practice. Safety Lewis Cine, who had initially agreed to join the Jets’ practice squad, has instead signed with the Bills’ practice squad. Additionally, cornerback Shemar Bartholomew, recently waived by the Jets, was claimed by the Panthers after being pursued by several teams.
