WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue football’s dominant 49-0 win over Indiana State showcased the potential of a fully healthy team against its toughest opponents.
With a major test—Notre Dame—looming, the Boilermakers are uncertain about the availability of two key Georgia transfers. Having a bye week before the game might boost their chances of returning.
Coach Ryan Walters had previously expressed cautious optimism about cornerback Nyland Green (foot) and receiver C.J. Smith (hamstring) being ready for the September 14 matchup against the Fighting Irish. However, he revealed on Tuesday that neither player is currently cleared to play.
The decision on their participation will depend on medical clearance rather than the significance of the game.
“We’re not keeping anyone out just for the sake of it,” Walters said. “But if they’re not ready, we won’t risk it. It’s a long season, and we don’t want to exacerbate any issues by rushing them back.”
Walters did confirm that left tackle Corey Stewart, defensive tackle Joe Anderson, and backup receiver Kam Brown are expected to be available for the Notre Dame game.
“They’ll be ready,” Walters said.
Their return will be crucial as Purdue faces its first of four preseason top-10 teams. Notre Dame started the season with a 23-13 win over then-No. 20 Texas A&M.
The return of Green and Smith could significantly enhance Purdue’s ability to compete with the historically strong opponent. The teams have met only once since 2014, with Purdue’s last victory in the series dating back to 2007.
Green, who was seen using a walking boot and scooter before the opener, was expected to be one of the starting outside cornerbacks and showed a physical, playmaking presence in early practices.
Smith, if fully fit, could also be a starter at slot receiver. His speed would provide valuable coverage mismatches in an offense that is already benefiting from contributions by big receivers like Jahmal Edrine and tight end Max Klare.
Overall, the confidence gained from the season opener has strengthened Purdue’s belief in its ability to compete with top-tier teams. Having Green and Smith back, or at least one of them, would improve the chances of an early-season upset.
