The San Diego Padres have managed to stay competitive despite trading Juan Soto last offseason, currently holding second place in the National League West and leading the Wild Card race.

Looking ahead to the upcoming offseason, the San Diego Padres might make a significant move. With several top starting pitchers set to become free agents, Zach Rymer of Bleacher Report has suggested that Corbin Burnes, currently excelling with the Baltimore Orioles, could be a potential target for San Diego.

Rymer notes that despite the Padres’ reduced payroll in 2024, there are already speculations about them attempting to re-sign Blake Snell this winter. If that doesn’t materialize, Burnes could be their Plan B.

As a California native, Burnes would be returning home if he joins the Padres. With Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish, Michael King, and Joe Musgrove already projected for their 2025 rotation, adding Burnes could create one of the most formidable pitching staffs in Major League Baseball, potentially challenging the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West crown.

While the Padres are on track for the postseason this year, targeting Burnes in the off-season could set them up for continued success. Despite their reduced payroll, they might have the capacity to boost spending, making Burnes a significant offseason target in a competitive market.
