The Chicago Bears have released veteran wide receiver Dante Pettis just before their Week 1 matchup against the Tennessee Titans for the 2024 season. According to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune, Pettis was removed from the injured reserve list with an injury settlement on September 5, ending his time with the Bears after a series of injuries plagued the past year of his career.
Pettis had a notable 2022 season with 19 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns, participating in all 17 games during the Bears’ roster overhaul. Although re-signed for 2023, a back injury led to a season-ending stint on injured reserve.
Despite a strong preseason performance in 2024, with five receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, Pettis’ future with the team was uncertain due to ongoing injuries. The Bears opted to release him with an injury settlement rather than keeping him on IR for the rest of the season, allowing him the possibility of joining another team this year.
In Pettis’ absence, DeAndre Carter, who has more experience as both a receiver and punt returner, has stepped into the role. At 31, Carter offers a solid alternative with his track record in the return game, which the Bears have prioritized. Although Carter has had some inconsistencies, he has generally performed better than Pettis in this role.
The Bears have depth at wide receiver heading into the season, featuring a strong trio of D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, and rookie Rome Odunze. They also have promising second-year player Tyler Scott and veteran Velus Jones Jr., along with Carter, to bolster their receiving corps. If needed, the practice squad includes Collin Johnson and Samori Toure for additional support.
