The Cleveland Browns released third-year wide receiver David Bell just days before their season opener, according to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi. The team has not announced any immediate roster moves following Bell’s departure, but there is a possibility he could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
Bell, selected in the third round of the 2022 draft, had a modest impact over his first two seasons, recording 38 catches for 381 yards. Despite a solid training camp where he was praised for his dependability by receivers coach Chad O’Shea, Bell was a cut candidate as the Browns finalized their 53-man roster.
Cedric Tillman’s impressive performance in training camp and preseason likely contributed to Bell’s release. Tillman, who caught 21 passes for 224 yards in his rookie year, showed significant improvement and dedication throughout the offseason. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski noted Tillman’s commitment and progress.
Tillman will need to continue earning his spot, as he’s currently behind Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore, and Jerry Jeudy on the depth chart. Rookie Jamari Thrash also made a strong case during preseason.
Meanwhile, quarterback Deshaun Watson is gearing up for the opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Despite playing only 12 games over the past two seasons, Watson feels ready to showcase his hard work and contribute to the team’s success. The Browns are favored by 2.5 points in the matchup.
