On Thursday, the New York Giants decided to part ways with veteran linebacker Carter Coughlin. However, Coughlin’s departure from the team might not be permanent, as he could remain with the organization in a different capacity.
Carter Coughlin, 27, was drafted by the Giants in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, selected 218th overall out of the University of Minnesota. Over his four-year stint with the Giants, he appeared in 55 games, though he started just two of them.
Primarily utilized on special teams, Coughlin saw significant action in that role last season, logging more snaps (397) on special teams than any other Giants player.
Despite his release, Coughlin has not vacated the Giants’ facility, suggesting that he may be transitioning to the practice squad. This move aligns with a report from USA TODAY’s Art Stapleton, indicating that the Giants are likely planning to keep him within their organization in some capacity.
With Coughlin’s release, the Giants now have an open slot on their 53-man roster. Additionally, they have one too many players on their practice squad, signaling that further roster adjustments are imminent.
In conjunction with Coughlin’s release, the Giants have also come to injury settlements with wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie and offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste. These moves reflect ongoing adjustments within the team as they refine their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
