The New York Jets are gearing up for the 2024 season, but it’s important to keep an eye on the future.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has highlighted potential destinations for Dak Prescott if he becomes available from the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. The Jets are among the top teams mentioned, especially given the uncertain future of 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers.
Although Rodgers has expressed a desire to continue playing beyond 2024, his performance and health are unpredictable. With the possibility of Rodgers not returning to his Pro Bowl level or even potentially leaving the team, there’s a chance that head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas could be replaced as well. In that scenario, a new leadership team might prioritize acquiring Prescott, who would likely be a top target, Knox noted in his article from September 5.
Knox outlined the Jets’ strong defense, promising young players, and Prescott’s potential to provide “long-term quarterback stability” as reasons why he’d be a good fit in New York.
Prescott, who is in the final year of his $160 million contract in 2024, is expected to become the highest-paid quarterback. Currently, the top-paid QB earns $55 million per year. Ted Nguyen of The Athletic predicts Prescott’s new contract could range from $60 million to $65 million annually, depending on whether he re-signs with the Cowboys or tests free agency.
With Prescott potentially entering free agency under historic circumstances, a bidding war is likely. Fortunately for the Jets, they have $92.2 million in cap space for the next offseason, according to Knox.
For now, the Jets are focused on the 2024 season, with no concern for the future. Former NFL general manager Randy Mueller highlighted the team’s current “all in” approach. The Jets are aiming for a Super Bowl win this season with Rodgers. If that doesn’t materialize, they will have the opportunity to explore their options next year.
