The Los Angeles Lakers might target another star player this offseason to join LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Bleacher Report recently highlighted one “ambitious” trade target for each NBA team, listing Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell as a potential fit for the Lakers. According to Dan Favale, the Lakers’ proposed trade package could involve Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and three future first-round picks.

Favale explained, “While managing three superstar salaries is challenging under the second apron tax, the Lakers are a unique situation. With LeBron James heading into his age-40 season, they won’t have to sustain three max contracts for long.”

Despite other teams potentially offering more attractive deals for Mitchell, his input will be crucial since he’s nearing free agency. The Lakers have a compelling package to offer, including three first-round picks, two pick swaps, five second-round picks, and players like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.

Mitchell, currently under a five-year, $163 million contract with two seasons left, has a $35.4 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season. He could opt out in 2025, leaving the Lakers not only with his remaining contract but also likely needing to negotiate a lucrative extension.

The Cavaliers may consider trading Mitchell if he doesn’t agree to an extension this offseason. Reports suggest a strong possibility that Mitchell will sign a new contract to stay with Cleveland beyond his current deal. According to The Athletic, there’s growing optimism around the league about Mitchell’s commitment to a contract extension with the Cavs.

Cleveland.com also indicated that the Cavaliers are unlikely to start next season with Mitchell in the final year of his contract. The team is expected to either secure an extension or explore trade options if Mitchell is not ready to commit.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the Lakers are prepared to make a significant offer for Mitchell if he becomes available. With LeBron James potentially entering free agency, the Lakers are under pressure to enhance their roster this offseason.
