The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed safety Terrell Edmunds, bringing him back to the team where he started his NFL career.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Steelers have signed Edmunds off the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad as of September 9. Edmunds, originally drafted by Pittsburgh as the 28th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Steelers.
To accommodate Edmunds, the Steelers have added him to their active roster, making room by placing rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee and punter Cameron Johnston on injured reserve recently. As per NFL regulations, Edmunds is guaranteed a spot on the roster and pay for at least three weeks, according to Steelers Depot’s Ross McCorkle.
In his seventh NFL season, Edmunds boasts a career total of 458 combined tackles, including 17 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and 6 interceptions over 96 games. Of those games, 75 were as a starter for the Steelers.
The timing of Edmunds’ return is noteworthy. Although the Steelers had opportunities to re-sign him during the 2023 offseason, they chose to go in a different direction at the safety position. Despite being available again this past offseason, the team showed no interest until now.
Edmunds’ return adds depth to the Steelers’ secondary. During his first stint in Pittsburgh, he accumulated 410 combined tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 5 interceptions, starting at least 12 games each season. His best statistical year came in 2019 with 105 combined tackles and 3 pass defenses.
In the past two seasons, Edmunds played for the Jaguars, Eagles, and Titans. He started three games for the Eagles before being traded to the Titans. He appeared briefly in Jacksonville’s season opener on September 8, but did not record any statistics.
The Steelers’ safety depth is bolstered by Edmunds’ return. With Minkah Fitzpatrick and DeShon Elliott as the starting safeties, and Damontae Kazee serving as the versatile No. 3 safety, Edmunds will add valuable depth. Miles Killebrew, another safety, focuses more on special teams.
There’s speculation about Edmunds potentially playing in the slot, as the team currently has undrafted rookie Beanie Bishop in that role while veteran Cameron Sutton serves an eight-game suspension. The exact role for Edmunds remains to be seen, but his return provides the Steelers with additional flexibility and experience in their secondary.
