Green Bay Packers fans have been facing uncertainty about their season with Jordan Love’s injury, but recent developments offer a glimmer of hope.
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Packers have opted not to place Love on injured reserve (IR), suggesting they are optimistic about his potential return ahead of schedule. Graziano noted on September 11, “It’s significant that the Packers did not place Love on IR on Monday, which could mean they expect he might not miss the full four games initially anticipated.”
Love’s MCL sprain is expected to require up to six weeks to heal fully. However, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, in a joint report with Graziano, mentioned that the Packers are focusing on getting through Weeks 2 to 5 with a strong running game and defense while hoping Love can return sooner.
By not moving Love to IR, the Packers leave open the possibility for his return in Week 3 or Week 4. Despite this optimism, Love will not be available for the Packers’ game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field this weekend. Head coach Matt LaFleur has confirmed that Malik Willis will start in Love’s place.
The Packers acquired Willis from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick on August 26. He will be making just his fourth career start, having joined the Packers less than three weeks ago. Sean Clifford, who is on the practice squad and was drafted by Green Bay in the fifth round of 2023, is expected to be promoted to the active roster to back up Willis.
While Clifford is more familiar with the Packers’ offense, Willis brings more NFL experience, having started three games (with a 1-2 record) during his rookie season with the Titans. Over his two-plus seasons, Willis has accumulated 350 passing yards, 3 interceptions, 144 rushing yards, and 1 touchdown, according to Pro Football Reference.
Currently, the Packers are not considering signing a veteran free agent quarterback such as Ryan Tannehill or pursuing a trade for an experienced quarterback. However, if Willis and/or Clifford underperform and the Packers fall to an 0-2 start, there could be increased urgency to explore other quarterback options.
The Packers will rely heavily on their defense, which faces a challenging task after allowing 34 points to the Philadelphia Eagles in their last game, despite forcing three turnovers.
