The Chicago Bears are optimistic about veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen’s status for Week 2’s matchup against the Houston Texans, despite his continued absence from practice. Head coach Matt Eberflus stated on September 11 that Allen, who is listed with a heel injury, missed the first practice of the week but will have an extra day to rest. Eberflus emphasized that the team is taking a cautious approach to ensure Allen is fully prepared for Sunday Night Football.
Allen has been dealing with a heel issue since leaving a practice on August 24, initially attributed to a “cleat issue” by Bears GM Ryan Poles. Although Allen was limited in practices before Week 1, he was heavily involved in the game against the Tennessee Titans, receiving a team-high 11 targets.
The Bears are also managing the injury status of first-round rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze, who is dealing with a mild knee sprain and is considered “day-to-day.” If Odunze remains unavailable, Allen and D.J. Moore will be crucial for the Bears’ passing game.
With Odunze likely out, second-year receiver Tyler Scott may see increased playing time. Scott was a healthy scratch in Week 1 despite a strong camp, but his availability is now critical. He will need to step up, especially with Odunze’s absence.
Additionally, defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker missed practice due to a foot injury. Walker played a significant role in Week 1 and his absence could be a concern, as the Bears might struggle to replace his versatility on the defensive line. Byron Cowart, who was elevated from the practice squad, had a limited impact in his debut.
Overall, while the Bears are managing several injuries, they remain hopeful for key players’ availability as they prepare for their game against the Texans.
