The Green Bay Packers illustrate the challenges a team with playoff hopes can face when their starting quarterback suffers an unexpected injury.
Jordan Love might be sidelined for a month, and currently, the Packers’ best alternative is third-year quarterback Malik Willis, who has only three NFL starts under his belt.
Experts, including Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, have urged Green Bay to sign Ryan Tannehill before it’s too late.
“Malik Willis couldn’t secure a backup role with the Titans, and you’re suggesting he’s a better choice than Ryan Tannehill to replace the injured Jordan Love? It’s astonishing,” Gagnon stated on September 13. “If Tannehill is open to joining the Packers, they must sign him. However, it’s likely too late for Week 2.”
If the Bears recognize the potential value of Tannehill as a backup to Caleb Williams and decide to pursue him, the added bonus of depriving the Packers of their top veteran free agent option should provide extra motivation. The Bears currently have around $8.5 million in salary cap space as of Friday.
