Before the 2024 season kicked off, Aaron Rodgers took the New York Jets wide receivers aside to deliver a clear message.
“He gathered us in the receiver room and told us, ‘I expect greatness from each of you.’ He made it clear he won’t tolerate any nonsense, and if he sees any loafing or mistakes, he’ll address it directly,” Jets wide receiver Mike Williams shared on “One Jets Drive.”
Williams added that Rodgers’ high standards reflect his own commitment to excellence, saying, “He expects greatness from everyone—coaches and players alike. I appreciate that a quarterback who holds everyone accountable is leading us.”
Rodgers brings a commanding presence to the Jets that has been lacking in recent years. Since 2019, the team has relied on rookie-contract quarterbacks like Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson, who lacked the experience and maturity to demand high standards from their teams. Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion, has the credentials and authority to set a new tone.
The Jets have long been considered a quarterback away from success, but they needed more than just football skills—they needed someone to unite the team and set a clear direction.
Wide receiver Allen Lazard, who had a disappointing 2023 season, is already showing signs of improvement. In Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, Lazard was a standout performer, leading the team in receiving yards and catching two touchdowns. He attributes his turnaround to focusing on his game and reducing off-field distractions.
Rodgers, while critical of Lazard’s early drop, praised his resilience and is counting on his continued improvement as the season progresses. The Jets will need contributions from all their key players to reach their goals for the season.
