It may be time for the New York Jets to consider a permanent adjustment to their starting lineup.

In their Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans, veteran linebacker and team captain C.J. Mosley suffered an injury and had to leave the field. The coaching staff substituted Jamien Sherwood, who delivered impressive results.

Former Jets wide receiver Rob Carpenter remarked, “This might not sit well with Jets fans, but I mentioned it during the game that I don’t wish injuries on anyone. Mosley’s injury seemed to change the dynamic. Quincy Williams moved to Mike LB, Sherwood stepped in, and the team’s speed and intensity changed the game.”

According to The Jet Press, Sherwood performed exceptionally well in Mosley’s absence, earning the highest defensive grade from PFF among Jets players for Week 2, with notable statistics including 10 tackles, 4 run stops, and a strong 78.3 coverage grade. The outlet suggested that Sherwood has proven himself as a starter in the league.

Jets Insider Dan Leberfeld also praised Sherwood’s performance, describing it as his best professional game to date.

Jets reporter Nick Faria bluntly stated that Sherwood “outplayed” Mosley and highlighted the need for the team to assess their linebacker situation moving forward. He described the current linebacker situation as “awkward,” especially given the Jets’ struggles to control the middle of the field. Faria noted that Mosley’s age and recent injury issues complicate the team’s decisions, while Sherwood’s superior speed and efficiency are evident.

Mosley, 32, is under contract through the 2025 season with a recent two-year deal worth $17.25 million. If the Jets decide to part ways next offseason, it would result in a $16.4 million dead cap hit, according to Spotrac. Despite this, there is speculation that Mosley’s role as a starting linebacker might be in jeopardy.

Robby Sabo of Jets X-Factor commented that the Jets defense has improved with Sherwood in the lineup.

The Jets’ defensive coaching staff deserves credit for Sherwood’s development. Originally drafted as a safety in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Sherwood has transitioned into a linebacker role and has seen significant playing time this season.

With Mosley’s status uncertain due to a toe injury, the Jets are optimistic about Sherwood’s ability to make an impact. Head Coach Robert Saleh praised Sherwood’s command of the game, communication, and athleticism.

Following the Jets’ victory over the Titans, Sherwood responded with determination, asserting that the team is eager to prove itself and make an impact every week.
