The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a more challenging position than anticipated after the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season. The season began with optimism following a solid victory over the Green Bay Packers, but the Eagles stumbled in their second game, falling to the newly revamped Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. Despite appearing to have the game under control, the Eagles struggled down the stretch and ultimately let the win slip away.
Currently holding a 1-1 record, Philadelphia is in search of an offensive jolt, particularly in light of the absence of their star receiver, A.J. Brown. This gap in their roster has highlighted the need for an additional playmaker who can contribute immediately. To address this pressing need, Bleacher Report’s scouting team has identified tight end Irv Smith as a potential candidate to bolster the Eagles’ offense.
According to Bleacher Report, “Consider Adding: TE Irv Smith.” The report notes that with Albert Okwuegbunam on injured reserve to start the season, the Eagles are thin at the tight end position. While Smith’s career so far has been somewhat underwhelming, he could provide a significant boost to the team’s tight end depth and offer a reliable option in case of emergencies.
Irv Smith, who is currently available, could indeed be a valuable addition. At just 26 years old, Smith is entering his fifth NFL season. He spent his first three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Cincinnati Bengals for the 2023 campaign. Smith was productive early in his career, with over 30 receptions in each of his first two seasons. However, his performance has declined over the past two years, partly due to injuries—he missed eight games in 2022. His opportunities with the Bengals last season were limited, leading to his current search for a new team.
Given the Eagles’ need for additional pass-catching options, bringing in a player like Smith could be beneficial. His presence could provide much-needed depth and versatility, potentially helping the Eagles improve their offensive performance as they navigate the remainder of the season.
