As he approaches his 30th birthday in January, a long-term deal with a new team seems unlikely, making him an appealing short-term option for a contending team. Graziano emphasized, “[Bears head coach] Matt Eberflus’ defense has played well to start the season, but his history suggests he believes in having depth on the defensive line.”
Currently in the final year of a three-year, $30 million contract, Jones has recorded 6 tackles and 1 quarterback hit so far this season. Over his career, he has accumulated 11 sacks and 6 forced fumbles, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
Adding Valuable Depth to the Defensive Line
Jones’s extensive experience would bolster the Bears’ defensive line, where he would serve as a valuable asset behind the solid starting duo of Andrew Billings and Gervon Dexter Sr. Jones has started 79 of 94 regular-season games during his eight-year career with the San Francisco 49ers and Broncos, maintaining a streak of starting every game he’s played since 2019. While Billings and Dexter have excelled so far—Billings ranking 7th among defensive tackles according to Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Dexter, a second-year player and 2023 second-round draft pick, sitting at 29th—depth remains a concern. Zacch Pickens, a third-round pick last year, is sidelined for the upcoming Week 3 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts due to a groin injury, having played only one game this season with just 7 defensive snaps. Chicago’s other backup, Chris Williams, has been a steady performer with an overall PFF grade of 66.7—slightly higher than Dexter’s—but has seen limited action, totaling just 30 defensive snaps compared to Dexter’s 85, which prevents him from qualifying for a ranking.
