The Chicago Bears found success in their running game during Week 4, even with former starter Khalil Herbert sidelined. This raises the question: Should the Bears explore trade options for the 26-year-old running back?
Against the Los Angeles Rams, the Bears recorded a season-high 131 rushing yards, led by D’Andre Swift’s impressive 93 yards and a 36-yard touchdown run—the longest for the Bears since Velus Jones Jr. in 2022. Roschon Johnson contributed as well, carrying the ball seven times for 27 yards and a touchdown, stepping into the short-yardage role previously held by Herbert.
With both Johnson and Swift significantly outsnapping Herbert this season, the Bears may value Herbert as injury insurance for their running backs, especially as they work to support rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. However, if Herbert doesn’t have a consistent role, trading him before the November 5 deadline could be beneficial for both parties.
The Dallas Cowboys, struggling with the league’s lowest rushing average, might be interested in acquiring a young back like Herbert. The Kansas City Chiefs could also be a viable option, especially since Isiah Pacheco will be sidelined for at least a month.
While Herbert has produced solid numbers in his first three seasons, his trade value may be limited due to his current standing in Chicago and the fact he’ll be a free agent in 2025. A potential trade scenario could involve the Chiefs sending two seventh-round picks to the Bears for Herbert, though there might be room for negotiation if desperation strikes.
Despite this uncertainty, the Bears demonstrated promise in their run game against the Rams. Swift looked worthy of his contract, not only rushing for 93 yards but also catching seven passes for 72 yards. Johnson showed his potential as well, after being underutilized in the early part of the season.
The big question now is whether the Bears can maintain this momentum in Week 5 against a Panthers defense that has allowed the fourth-most rushing yards this season and will be missing key linebackers due to injuries. If they can stay healthy, the Bears might be primed to build on their Week 4 performance.
