Seahawks Trade $7 Million Starter for Ex-Super Bowl Champion in Blockbuster NFL Deal”

The Seattle Seahawks have made headlines by trading starting linebacker Jerome Baker and a future fourth-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for linebacker Ernest Jones IV. This significant move comes under the leadership of head coach Mike Macdonald and reflects his preference for Jones over Baker, who recently signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Seahawks.

Jones, previously with the Los Angeles Rams, had an impressive 2023 season, recording a career-high 145 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 6 quarterback hits, and 4.5 sacks in 15 games. As a key player on the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2021, Jones was drafted in the third round that year. He currently ranks seventh among linebackers in tackles for loss, according to Pro Football Focus.

Interestingly, Jones was traded to the Titans just this August for a late-round pick, making this new deal with Seattle a strategic gain for both teams. The Titans benefit by acquiring Baker along with a fourth-round selection, giving them added value in the trade.

“Seattle was actively seeking linebacker upgrades,” noted Sports Illustrated’s Corbin Smith. “They just landed a player in his prime who fits the athletic profile Mike Macdonald prefers.”

However, the Seahawks will need to consider Jones’ future, as he is in the final year of a four-year, $4.7 million rookie contract and will be a free agent in 2025. Analysts have described Jones as a blue-collar linebacker with strong field IQ and toughness, though he has some limitations in speed and coverage.

In related news, the Seahawks are also nearing the return of starting right tackle Abe Lucas, who has been out due to injury. Lucas, along with veteran George Fant, has been designated to return to practice, offering hope for Seattle’s offensive line as they prepare for the upcoming games.
