As a result, the Broncos are hesitant to trade key players, including starting nose tackle D.J. Jones, who has attracted interest from the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the November 5 deadline, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. However, the Broncos are reportedly not keen on making a deal.
Russini noted that both Jones and Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner have been discussed internally, but neither team seems willing to part with their respective players. With Javon Hargrave sidelined for the season, the 49ers are seeking defensive tackle help, particularly someone who can also pressure the passer.
Jones, 29, was drafted by the 49ers in 2017 and played a significant role in their defense, contributing to their Super Bowl appearance in 2021. He signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Broncos in 2022 and has a cap hit of $12.9 million for 2024, with total career earnings of $26 million.
Despite his contributions—96 tackles, three forced fumbles, and two recoveries over three seasons—Jones has a backup, Malcolm Roach, who is close behind him in snap count and has received a higher grade from Pro Football Focus this season.
Trading Jones could save the Broncos $9.9 million in cap space while incurring a $2.9 million dead cap hit, providing them with flexibility to extend left tackle Garett Bolles, who is in the final year of his contract. Bolles has been the Broncos’ highest-graded offensive player this season, making him an essential asset as they navigate the upcoming challenges.
