New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard is doubtful for the upcoming game against the New England Patriots due to a chest injury, which creates an opportunity for rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley to make his mark in 2024.
Corley was the 65th overall pick in the third round of the April draft, with the Jets trading up to select the former Western Kentucky standout. There were high expectations for him to emerge as a dynamic playmaker, akin to Deebo Samuel, in the Jets’ offense.
However, despite the buzz surrounding him, Corley has been largely absent this season. According to Pro Football Reference, he hasn’t played since the Week 3 matchup against the Patriots. Zack Rosenblatt from The Athletic reported that Corley has been a healthy scratch for three consecutive games leading into Week 8.
So far this season, Corley has recorded just one catch for four yards.
Jets Coach Discusses Corley’s Development
Jets offensive coordinator Todd Downing recently addressed Corley’s lack of playing time, emphasizing his potential. “He’s a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. I think he’s maturing and realizing that this is a profession; it’s not like college where you can just show up and dominate. It’s been encouraging to see him grow by leaning on veterans for advice,” Downing stated.
His comments suggest that Corley may be experiencing challenges as he adjusts to the NFL.
Limited Opportunities
Corley has played only two offensive snaps in the first seven games, largely due to the depth at the wide receiver position for the Jets.
“My advice to him is to stay ready because you never know when your chance will come,” Downing noted. “Just because you’re not active on Sundays doesn’t mean we don’t believe in you. The depth in our wide receiver room is impressive. Not making the top five or six isn’t a slight against Malachi; it reflects the strength of our roster,” he added.
The Jets’ receiving corps includes Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams, Mike Williams, Lazard, Xavier Gipson, and Irv Charles. With Lazard likely out for Week 8, a spot opens up in the receiving rotation.
Lazard is currently playing under a $44 million contract he signed with the Jets in 2023.
A New Opportunity for Corley
Lazard has played a significant role in the Jets’ offense this season, ranking second on the team in receiving yards (412), third in receptions (30), and leading with five touchdowns.
While other key players like Wilson, Adams, and Breece Hall will likely fill the offensive gap, Corley could also find a role in the return game. The Jets have struggled in this area with Isaiah Davis and Gipson handling those duties.
Corley is known for his ability to break tackles and make plays after the catch, and it would be intriguing to see how he performs in the return game. Given the current lack of success in that department, inserting a fresh talent like Corley could provide a much-needed spark on special teams.
