Josh Addo-Carr has shared an emotional message with fans following the conclusion of his time at the Bulldogs, as the club terminated his contract after a board meeting on Thursday afternoon.
This decision comes after the winger tested positive for cocaine during a roadside drug test in September, which led him to step down from the team for the club’s first finals appearance in eight years. Although Addo-Carr initially provided a version of events that garnered club support, officials were upset when his statements contradicted police evidence.
In a brief statement, Addo-Carr expressed gratitude to Bulldogs fans for their support during his three years at Belmore. “To all the Bulldogs fans and family, thank you for a memorable three years. Your love and support since I arrived has been incredible, and I will always cherish the memories,” he wrote. He also thanked the club’s sponsors and board, as well as his teammates and coaching staff, emphasizing the lasting bond they created.
Addo-Carr is now a free agent following his dismissal, despite maintaining his innocence regarding the drug allegations. He had previously made his case at the Bulldogs’ headquarters in Belmore.
Reflecting on his time with the Bulldogs, he said, “I came to the Bulldogs in 2022 when the club was struggling. I aimed to help restore it to its former glory and build a winning culture. I’m proud of the turnaround we achieved in three years. Unfortunately, circumstances prevent me from continuing with the Bulldogs, but I wish the club, my teammates, and especially the fans, nothing but success.”
The NRL had issued Addo-Carr a breach notice, and the Bulldogs confirmed on Thursday evening that he had played his final game for the club. The Eels and Dragons are rumored to be interested in him for the 2025 season, making him a sought-after player on the market.
In a club statement, the Bulldogs announced the termination of Addo-Carr’s contract, emphasizing that the decision was not made lightly and followed careful consideration. They acknowledged his contributions over the past three seasons and the disappointment felt by fans. The club stressed the importance of maintaining a culture built on clear standards and values, stating that the combination of the failed drug test and a lack of transparency constituted serious breaches of contractual obligations.
The Bulldogs reiterated their commitment to supporting players through welfare programs and expressed their well wishes for Addo-Carr and his family during this transition.
