Gethro Muscadin, a former basketball player at Kansas and New Mexico State, passed away on Monday due to injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2021. He was 22 years old.
Kansas head coach Bill Self shared the news on Tuesday, saying, “Gethro left us late last night. He was involved in a serious car accident 10 months ago and had been in a non-responsive state ever since. Although he was only here for one year, Gethro was beloved by everyone and will always be remembered as a Jayhawk. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Muscadin was a passenger in a single-vehicle crash on December 30, 2021, in which the car veered off the road, rolled multiple times, and came to a stop near a fence, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. His girlfriend, who had attended a Kansas vs. Nevada basketball game with him the day before, was driving the vehicle.
Originally from Haiti, Muscadin moved to the United States at 16 to pursue his basketball dreams. He played one season at Kansas in 2020-21 before transferring to New Mexico, where he averaged 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 12 games. He had been in a coma for nearly 10 months following the accident.
