A new MLB rumor suggests that the Detroit Tigers may be looking to trade for a future Hall-of-Famer, but only if a specific condition is met in the deal.
The Tigers’ rebuild took a significant step forward in 2024. After a nearly 100-loss season two years ago, Detroit returned to the postseason for the first time in a decade. Not only did they secure a rare playoff spot, but they also stunned the Houston Astros, eliminating them in just two games.
Though their playoff run ended in the Divisional Series against AL Central rivals the Cleveland Guardians, it appears the team’s rebuild is complete. They are now focused on establishing a consistent playoff contender with the goal of competing for a World Series before the decade ends.
It’s no surprise, then, that the Tigers have been linked to several prominent players on the free agent and trade markets, looking to bolster their improving lineup alongside talents like Matt Vierling, Colt Keith, and Riley Greene.
On Wednesday, a fresh rumor connected them to a potential trade for one of the best players of the past decade, with one major caveat.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Tigers are among the teams interested in trading for Nolan Arenado, a right-handed bat the team has been seeking. A key part of the potential deal could involve the Tigers requesting cash to help offset the remaining $52 million on Arenado’s contract.
While the 33-year-old’s performance has declined in recent years, with his 2024 numbers being among the lowest of his career, Arenado remains a future Hall-of-Famer and a 10-time Gold Glove winner. His willingness to switch to first base adds an intriguing layer to the trade possibilities, especially for a young team looking for veteran leadership.
