Alabama Adds Florida Transfer Kelby Collins to Strengthen Defensive Line
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — As the Alabama football program prepares for its season finale in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan, the Crimson Tide is also hard at work managing its roster through the transfer portal. With the portal open until December 28, Alabama secured its first transfer addition of the season on Tuesday, welcoming former Florida defensive lineman Kelby Collins.
Collins, a native of Gardendale, Alabama, played two seasons at Florida, appearing in 18 games. During his time with the Gators, he recorded 29 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and forced one fumble. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, Collins brings a versatile skill set to Alabama’s defensive line.
“Excited for Kelby Collins to be with us,” said Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. “This is a time of year where you try to make your roster the best it can be to compete in the upcoming season. Kelby is a guy many of us have had relationships with before, particularly Freddie Roach. He’s had success in the SEC, and we’re eager to see what he can bring to the table here.”
Collins’ versatility is a key selling point. Head coach Kalen DeBoer added, “He can do a lot of different things and adds depth to a group with good competition. He can play both inside and outside, which is valuable as we look to get more pressure on the quarterback.”
With several players departing through the transfer portal, Alabama’s defensive line is undergoing some reshuffling. Collins is expected to begin his career with the Crimson Tide as a “bandit,” or field defensive end. Wommack noted, “He’s a big man with a developing skill set, and we’re excited to see how he fits in.”
As the transfer portal window remains open through late December, Alabama continues to assess options to bolster its roster for the 2025 season, making Collins’ addition a significant first step in that process
