New Orleans Saints coach Darren Rizzi provided an update on Alvin Kamara’s groin injury on Thursday, revealing that it’s more significant than initially thought. Kamara’s injury, which was initially expected to be less severe, has now been deemed to involve “a little bit more significant” damage, leaving his status for the team’s remaining games uncertain. Kamara is currently considered week-to-week, and his return remains unclear for the Saints’ upcoming match against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.
Rizzi indicated that it’s unlikely Kamara will play this week and noted that the injury could result in multiple weeks of missed time. While there have been multiple opinions from medical staff regarding Kamara’s condition, surgery has not been ruled out. Rizzi emphasized that the team, Kamara, and the medical staff would take their time evaluating the best course of action, aiming to bring Kamara back before the end of the season.
On another injury front, quarterback Derek Carr’s status remains up in the air. Despite being sidelined after injuring his left, non-throwing hand in the Saints’ 14-11 victory over the New York Giants, Carr is reportedly determined to return to the field. Rizzi confirmed that Carr has been in the facility every day working hard on his rehab, and the Saints have not ruled him out for Monday’s game. However, Carr has not practiced since the injury, and Rizzi reiterated that the team will not rush him back until he’s fully functional.
If Carr is unable to play, Spencer Rattler is preparing to start in his place. Rizzi emphasized that the Saints won’t risk Carr’s health, and the decision will be made based on Carr’s ability to perform at a high level without further risk of injury.
Regarding top receiver Chris Olave, Rizzi confirmed that Olave, who has suffered two concussions this season, has entered a 21-day period where he can practice without counting against the active roster. Although Rizzi expressed doubt that Olave will return this season, he was pleased that Olave has been cleared for football activities, calling the news a positive step forward for the receiver.
With multiple injuries affecting key players, the Saints are navigating a challenging stretch as they prepare for their remaining games.
