Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen is at the center of one of the more compelling and realistic trade proposals in recent memory.
With the Eagles’ well-known need for a reliable WR3 behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice has suggested a potential player-for-player trade. The proposal involves sending Steen to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for third-year wide receiver Alec Pierce.
Pierce, a second-round pick by the Colts in 2022, was drafted for his impressive blend of size and athleticism. Kempski highlighted that Pierce’s role last season was similar to that of Quez Watkins, though Pierce managed to make more impactful plays when given the opportunity.
This trade makes sense for both teams, and here’s why.
Could the Eagles Trade Tyler Steen?
Steen, a third-round pick for the Eagles in 2023, appeared in 11 games last season, with one start, and only logged 71 offensive snaps. At the start of training camp, he was in line for the starting right guard position but lost out to Mekhi Becton after suffering an ankle injury early in camp. With the preseason winding down, Becton has emerged as the starter, leaving Steen’s future uncertain.
Given the Eagles’ depth at guard, with players like Trevor Keegan, Dylan McMahon, Brett Toth, Nick Gates, and Darian Kinnard available, it’s possible that Steen could become expendable. For the Colts, the right guard position has been a weakness, and while Steen might not immediately be a better option than Will Fries, he has more upside. Fries is also in the final year of his contract, making Steen an intriguing prospect.
How Would Alec Pierce Benefit the Eagles?
Pierce would be a strong addition to the Eagles’ receiving corps. The 6-foot-3, 211-pound receiver is a dynamic blend of size, speed, and athleticism. Still only 24 years old, Pierce was drafted by the Colts in the second round of the 2022 draft. He would give quarterback Jalen Hurts another viable target with his physical tools.
Pierce had solid seasons in his first two years, recording 41 receptions for 593 yards and 2 touchdowns as a rookie, followed by 32 catches for 514 yards and 2 TDs in 2023. His average of 15.2 yards per catch over his first two seasons is impressive, especially considering he’s had inconsistent quarterback play. With Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles throwing to him in 2022, and Gardner Minshew filling in for an injured Anthony Richardson in 2023, Pierce hasn’t had much stability at the quarterback position. With Jalen Hurts, he would have the best passer he’s played with so far.
A trade involving Steen and Pierce could benefit both teams and players, making it an idea the Eagles might want to explore.
