The Houston Astros are set to look quite different next season, but there’s still a possibility that a familiar player might return.
After trading Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs, the Astros have lost two key figures from their recent playoff runs. On top of that, star third baseman Alex Bregman is still considering offers in free agency, potentially leading to the loss of another important player.
Astros GM Dana Brown had recently expressed doubt about the team’s chances of retaining Bregman, suggesting it seemed like a done deal that he would be leaving. However, it may come as a surprise that the Astros are still actively working towards bringing him back.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, while GM Dana Brown had indicated some pessimism about Bregman’s future with the team, it appears the Astros have upped their initial offer of a six-year, $156 million deal made in November.

This news comes shortly after the New York Mets secured a reunion with star free agent Pete Alonso on a short-term, $54 million contract. Insider Bob Nightengale reported that Bregman is not interested in a short-term deal and is seeking a contract lasting six or seven years.
With Bregman making it clear that he’s looking for a long-term deal, the Astros have reportedly ramped up their efforts to re-sign him. The Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers are also interested, but it increasingly looks like a return to Houston might be in the cards.
As one of the last top free agents available, Bregman’s decision will be closely watched. However, with little clarity so far, it could still be a while before a final resolution is reached. The situation has remained mysterious, and this trend may continue as spring training approaches.
As FanSided’s Robert Murray noted, “Bregman’s market has remained a mystery all offseason,” and it’s clear that a resolution isn’t imminent.
